PHILOSOPHICAL DICTIONARY – Arts, the Fine

Arts, the Fine. We thus entitle such arts as have for their aim the exhibition of things in their ideal, and therefore the production of beauty. So long as mere utility or convenience is the end, we deny this rank to an art; I say mere utility or convenience, for it may be both an utilitarian and a fine art, as for example architecture. The labourer in the mechanical, we call an artizan; in the fine arts, we style the presiding worker the ἀρχιτἐκτων, an artist. See Æsthetic.
